Analogue
Man
Closely
Guarded Secret
The
lo-fi aesthetic isn't everybody's cup of tea, but for those more
into originality than accuracy, Closely
Guarded Secret may
just find a place in your musical teapot. A singer- songwriter so
far out of the mainstream that we're not even sure if he's in the
water, Analogue Man turns a tune in the tradition of lo-fi gurus
like D.
Johnston, E.
Gaffney, B.
Callahan, and
L.
Barlow
So
who is Analogue Man? Apparantly that's
the
closely guarded secret.
"Free
? That's inrageous!"
(John
Lennon, seance)

What
kind of a fool would walk out on stage in front of a rock crowd with
no idea what they were about to play? According to
Sebastian
Brant,
Fools
of Type Number 59 are the “nocturnal courters and beters of
the stretes, playing by night on instrumantes, and using like
follies, when time is to reste”
(from
The
Ship Of Fools 1494)
That
would make Tomato Type

Interesting
Animal
Twice
In A Blue Moon
Carrying
a recorder wherever he goes, this intrepid sampler of the sounds of
the interesting animal takes us on his wayward sonic journey through
Manhattan subways, tuning in and out of New York's AM radiorama,
past the manic buskers and rapademics, past Diamanda Galas insipring
awe in the Cathedral of St. John, guided by green lights through
Barbara Feldon's trip to the outer reaches of the cosmos, until he
eventually arrives back where he's been all along –- stuck in
a recurring fascination with a handful of blue-moon moments captured
under carefully controlled conditions in various Ludlow Street sub-
and super-terrainian rehersal rooms. Digital rarefaction and
decompression makes the point that much clearer, and dials the
background exactly. Presto, hey?
Raptured
Bridegrooms
Wild
Blue Yonder
"Dementia
is all in the mind" say the Raptured
Bridegrooms,
and if these recordings are anything to go by, they appear know what
they're talking about. Down on all fours, they grope about in the
darkness, looking for loopholes
in time and cryptic messages
from the other side. Along the
way, RB
document
a musical moment somewhere between
the Swell Maps and the Fungus
Brains. Less cerebral than
People With Chairs Up Their Noses,
less actual than Wrecks Small Speakers On Expensive Stereos, RB
have
clearly been listening to too much Sun City Girls, and Thinking
Fellas Union Local 282 right before listening to Brian Eno's "Here
Come The Warm Jets"..
